After working at Yale University, my arrival at Chart Links was a bit of a shock. While my experience at Yale was amazing, it is a huge organization with lots of structure and policies with little room for creativity and exploration. From the moment I met Betty Esposito, I knew Chart Links was going to be very different. First, on the day of my interview I arrived to find Betty washing a few dishes that had been left in the kitchen sink. I guess my surprise showed on my face because Betty explained the programmers were working on a critical service issue and she was washing the dishes so they could take care of the customer. This reaction on Betty’s part was not a fluke. On countless occasions, she went above and beyond the call of duty to facilitate the resolution of a customer issue. Whether flying to a customer site with me during a go-live or guiding a client through a particularly difficult problem, Betty was always the first to step up to the plate. Betty’s frontline experience with clients served her well in her role as the Vice President of Development. She garnered enormous respect from the clients through her thorough understanding of the rehab world and the challenges presented there. Betty also recognized that each organization was a little different and listened carefully to the individuals who performed the work on a daily basis to ensure our workflow analysis resulted in a system that would most effectively meet their needs. This, however, did not mean blind obedience. When pressured by the client to provide data not currently collected in the system, she would always ask what the client used the data for or how they currently handled the situation. This one little question often saved countless hours/dollars scurrying to provide functionality that was not necessary. In addition, Betty was able to synthesize the information gathered a number of clients and sales demo to identify enhancements that were needed in the product to make the product more viable. These qualities have served Betty well in her career, but the one asset that eclipses all others is her personality. I have attended countless sales demos with Betty and have watched her lure people in with her genuine interest in their business and issues. In more than one case, the client’s faith in her integrity was the deciding factor in selecting Chart Links over another vendor.
