I have worked ashore in the Defence Network Operations Centre as a Communications Watch Officer for DEFCOMMSTA Canberra and in the Tactical Communications Instruction (TCI) Cell for DEFCAMAUS.Whilst employed in these roles my primary roles included:- Drafting and releasing formal messages reporting on issues, faults and outages affecting the operation of DEFCOMMSTA Canberra on behalf of the OIC.- Liaise with external agencies and support organisations to ensure the continuity of services on behalf of the OIC.- Supervise the operation of; Defence Formal Messaging Systems services, Strategic IP Network services, Strategic Satellite services, Strategic International Trunks, Defence HF Communication System services.- Supervise subordinate personnel to ensure adherance to processes and procedures directed within C4 Doctrine, Policy and Stndard Operation Procedures.- Coordinate watch log entries and state board updates.- Supervise personnel mustering COMSEC material and equipment.- Carry out and supervise the destruction of COMSEC material.- Supervise the implementation of training plans for subordinate staff.

As a Communications Supervisor, I supervised CIS architecture onboard HMAS Newcastle, Deploying to the Middle East Region in support of Operation Manitou.I have had extensive experience stepping up in the role as Communications Manager (PO) During URE and from this I have gained the knowledge and skill set required for progressing further and moving up the ranks. As a Communications Information Systems (CIS) Sailor I was responsible with operating and maintaining CIS architecture to provide command defined capability.During my time as an Operator I served ashore at FICTS Waterhen and DEFCOMMSTA Sydney, providing support to Fleet units in the form of ICT Helpdesk, Hardware Procurement and Network Monitoring.I also served on HMA Ships Huon and Darwin, Deploying to the Middle East Area of Operations in support of Operation Slipper. Primary Responsibilities included:- Appropriate handling of highly classified information, Accountable COMSEC Material (ACM) and Accountable Classified Cryptographic Material (ACCM)- Operation, configuration and monitoring of the ships satellite bearer systems - Operating and configuring Information Exchange Systems, Maritime Tactical Wide Area Networks (MTWAN) and Strategic Communication Networks- Operate, configure and maintain Local Area Networks- Maintaining Physical and Communications security- Communicate inter-ship by ship/shore radio teletype, ship/shore satellite, voice and radio teletype, video conferencing, chat, facsimile, email, tactical and administrative voice radio, flashing light (Morse code) and flag signalling; - Advise Command on tactical signalling and ship manoeuvring, and encode/decode and disseminate tactical and manoeuvring signals; - Perform shipboard flag ceremonial procedures; and - Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on communications compartments and specific equipment such as signal projectors, lights, flags, portable radios and selected information technology equipment.- Other duties as directed by the Communications Supervisor, Manager or Command.
