Jul 2016 - Sep 2016
I was awarded a scholarship from the Carnegie Trust to undertake a 6 week research project in the laboratory of Professor Annette MacLeod of the Wellcome Trust investigating asymptomatic Human African Trypanosomiasis using a new bioluminescence luciferase (NanoLuc). I successfully transfected both T.b.brucei (247SMOX strain) and T.b.gambiense (427 strain) with a plasmid containing the NanoLuc gene and established luminescence in cell culture and in a mouse model (all animal work was carried out by qualified personal though advised by myself). I continued for a further 2 weeks after the end of the scholarship to allow me to complete my project in full. During my investigation I gained experience in techniques such as Tissue Culture of T.b.brucei (247, 247Smox & 247SmoxNLuc), Miniprep, Midiprep, Purification, Ethanol Precipitation Transfection of E.coli, T.b.brucei & T.b.gambiense, Plasmid Construction, PCR and Gel Electrophoresis. Jan 2013 - Sep 2013
I was employed as a waitress and was trained to serve in the restaurant and at functions of varying sizes. Despite my young age I was trusted serving small functions alone and helped to train new staff. I predominatly served at weddings and large functions such as The Wedding Fair but also provided service for smaller more intimate events such as family parties which allowed for more interaction with the guests. I enjoyed my position at the hotel and left due to being offered a more suitable job at a law firm with guarenteed hours. Show less
