As an intern based in the daily news team, I was responsible for writing news articles, including covering the trial of investigative journalist Khadija Ismayilova in Azerbaijan. I also independently researched and produced an analysis piece looking at corruption in Azerbaijan, and helped to plan and research two upcoming investigations. Having received media law and social media training, I was also responsible for producing the weekly newsletter, translating from and into Russian, proofreading texts written by non-native English speakers, interviewing witnesses and tracking OCCRP’s reach in social media, online and in print. In addition to continuing in my role as a PASS Leader to facilitate these sessions, as the department’s Student Coordinator I am responsible for organising the weekly debrief for the other PASS Leaders. This involves liaising with both the Sabbatical Officer for Humanities and the Senior Language tutor, as well as planning activities to demonstrate each week to inspire the other Leaders for their own sessions. This role also involves ensuring the smooth running of the scheme, including making sure that the sessions are well attended and organised, and that students are benefitting from it.

      I spent six months working as a volunteer with the Cedar Foundation in an orphanage for disabled children in Buzovgrad, Bulgaria. Having already made an initial two week trip in 2009, I and a partner fundraised £6000 to return for six months during 2011. We made a subsequent trip in August 2012 and continue to fundraise on a monthly basis to pay for a ‘baba’ (key-worker) for one of the children whom we worked with. In 2013, in order to raise awareness of the issue of institutionalisation in orphanages in post-Soviet states, I organised a screening of the documentary “Bulgaria’s Abandoned Children” at Manchester University. This subsequently led to the creation of a student volunteering project in orphanages in Romania in partnership with the Life Foundation.
