I'm frequently asked 'Why are you still writing for print publications?' I give a variety of answers, but the real reason is Bernie Niemeier. He's one of my heroes in journalism, and it's not only because he signs my freelance paychecks: it's because of his courage and determination to prove that quality work and ceaseless respect for his customers are the most important values in any business. Unlike so many veterans of the news industry who long ago grew frustrated by and saw their economic fortunes suffer from the rising popularity of digital news delivery, Bernie did not surrender and shutter 'Virginia Business'. He and his partners rescued it from Media General Inc. and made it more relevant than ever. Then, as now, he preaches that quality content written for educated readers will deliver financially. In spite of some infrequent disagreements about how my "pearls of prose" get edited, I'm proud to be associated with him and his wonderful staff of generous, courteous and professional editors and staff.
