His role was to develop the company's strategy for using analytics to make better decisions. Bernie mobilised and led a team to shape and deliver a significant transformation programme to support senior management in making effective Strategic and Operational decisions, using advanced analytics and data science exploration. This involved significant cultural change, as well as capability, data and technology across the JS business and 400+ analysts. Bernie took some really innovative steps to lead the market in this space and has delivered a significant and demonstrable change; running the team as an internal consultancy function and delivering an enviable pipeline of more that 500 projects on time, budget and ahead of expectations. His team pioneered in new ways of working: encouraging safe failure, agile working, collaboration & rapid prototyping. It also established collaboration networks with a range of academics and commercial organisations which were highly successful. Bernie's ambition on joining Sainsbury's was to make analytics pervasive across the group and used by every function; that was realised by the Summer of 2015. For each £1 invested in analytics, his team achieved a direct return of £13.48, and an indirect return many times this.
