Despite multiple, innovative, financial solutions in Africa, persistent challenges remain in servicing at scale, the financially included. Multiple factors that include: high marginal costs of operations for MFI’s to service this target community; need for enabling technology at scale; lack of trust with financial institutions by communities; and inability to make scalable, credit-based decisions have hampered this effort. MaTontine’s innovation provides an opportunity to solve the problem indicated above by: digitizing the existing, traditional, peer-to-peer savings and loan system (each with its own dedicated manager) with millions of users called Tontine in Francophone Africa (Natt in Senegal, Njangis in Cameroon etc.); and then incorporating the use of mobile payments and mobile phones.
