  Research project funded by the DFG: "Introduction of IT-aided controls in the chemical industry" Main focus were changes of the work of workers in control rooms. In the past analog displays offered a panoramatic overview of the complete chemical production process. The digital displays with a number of different windows to operate changed the cognitive requirements and altered the work process. Relying on the work of Bainbridge ("Ironies of Automation") the researcher analysed the interplay of formal (displays and the information provided through the the preselected routines and sensors) and informal communication (discussion about the state of the process between co-workers in a case of emergency).
