The aim of this placement was to acquire the practical skills to prepare samples for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation. The samples were thin layers of EuTiO3 and LaAlO3 of different thicknesses, deposited onto a single crystalline support material whereby the area of interest was the interface between the thin layers. In order to produce samples for TEM, different techniques were deployed, including parallel grinding and polishing as well as ion milling and finally dimpling yielding a small area of interest only a couple of microns in thickness, where electrons could easily scatter and reveal the positions of atoms. Synthesis and manufacturing of strontium titanate single crystals using an optical floating zone furnace. Whereby the strontium titanate was substituted with Co, Fe and Cr in order to achieve the desired electrial properties. For the manufacture the oxide powders were mixed thoroughly and calcined before rods were prepared and sintered at 1200 °C. These polycrystalline rods were then recrystallined onto a comercially available single crystalline seed crystal in an optical floating zone furnace. The single crystals produced were cylindrical and measured approximately 20 mm in length and 6 mm diameter. They were characterised at PSI. Show less

Working as part of the international research group Solid State Chemistry and Catalysis of Prof. Dr. Anke Weidenkaff at the Empa research facility in Dübendorf, Switzerland. The aim of this placement was to synthesise material in order to produce thermoelectric oxide modules. The n-type semiconducter material was CaMnO3 and the p-type LaCuO4, whereby both Mn and La was substituted with Nb and Sr respectively in very small quantities in order to increase power output. During the synthesis many practical skills were learnt. In order to characterise both calcined powders and sintered bulk materials, XRD as well as light- and electron microscopy were used. Final power outputs of the assembled modules was measured using an in house set up. Show less
