Bio
Benjamin Todd Jealous
Ben has been a key part of my inner circle for more than half a decade. He is a brilliant writer, thinker and strategist. I first understood Ben’s courage and devotion to the cause of justice in April 2012, when I was President and CEO of the national NAACP and he joined me on a weeklong trip to Sanford, FL. The city was a virtual powder keg in the wake of the Trayvon Martin killing. We landed on a Sunday evening, and I asked Ben to organize a public hearing for victims of police violence the next day. When I arrived at the church the following afternoon, there were 20 victims waiting to provide testimony, and several local and national media outlets in attendance. Ben provided indispensable leadership, and our week was off to a powerful start. From that day forward, Ben played critical leadership roles developing and executing communications strategies for the NAACP’s successful efforts to pass marriage equality, expand voting rights, end stop-and-frisk in New York City and abolish the death penalty in Maryland. In the years after, Ben provided invaluable leadership on the production of my first book,
