Mr. William (Ben) Waskey frequently came to mind as I read Adam Grant’s book, Originals, which describes the many great ways in which these forward thinkers have set the standard for innovation and success. I have known Ben since his start at Westinghouse in 2010 when he first made the transition from active Marine duty to civilian life. Since that time, I have been thoroughly impressed by his natural leadership skills and consistent desire to learn, advance and contribute. It is clear to me that these qualities and a strong work ethic have earned Ben ever increasing levels of responsibility in our organization. What’s even more impressive is a very altruistic foundation that he exemplifies both inside and outside of the office. Regardless of the workload and challenges he may be facing, Ben always finds the time to greet you with a smile, look you in the eye and have a meaningful conversation. This holds true outside of work where he demonstrates a strong love for his family and the time he spends with them. I can’t stress enough just how much I look up to Ben for his many great qualities – something that I find to be rare and unparalleled. I have no doubt that in any organization, regardless of size or industry, Ben will always be an original and notable contributor.

I had the unique pleasure of working with Ben both as a colleague and, in certain situations, as a supervisor. Ben, regardless of the situation, always exhibits the qualities you most seek and cannot find in many people: honesty, a strong work ethic, and leadership. Having been in many challenging situations together, Ben is unflappable and steadfast in his character and will never sway from taking the high road. He will always work until the task is completed, no matter how daunting. Ben is very detail oriented and organized within his personal and professional life. As a leader, Ben is unique: he leads by serving those who follow him. His Marines always came first, and in turn, they respected and followed his lead. From my own perspective as a manager/leader I would hire Ben Waskey in an instant. There is no limit to what he can accomplish within an organization.
