Four-month clinical placement with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and Inverclyde Royal Infirmary. I worked with orthotists providing patients with insoles, footwear, AFOs, knee braces and KAFOs. This also included visits to wards across both hospitals for fitting of spinal braces, collars, and upper limb orthotics. I was exposed to all sorts of patients and was operating autonomously for most appointments by the end of my placement. During this time, I worked on my skills of: - Patient assessment around the foot, ankle, knee, hip and gait. - Further build upon patient communication, history taking and clinical note keeping. - Casting and modification for orthotics using plaster of paris, impression boxes and 3D scanning. - Measuring for stock, modular and bespoke footwear. -Communication within the MDT environment. Four-month work placement with Ability Matters at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dún Laoghaire. I worked with senior prosthetists working with primary patients on the POLAR in-patient, day-patient and outpatient programmes. I had the opportunity to work with a wide variety of patients including some with more complex presentations such as multiple skin grafts, bilateral AK-BK and hip disarticulation. During this time I have improved my skills of: - Patient communication and assessment. - Casting and rectification using plaster or CAD-CAM scanning for patients with below or above knee amputations. - Lower limb prosthetic fitting and alignment. - General problem solving during review appointments. - Team work and communication with members of the P&O team as well as the wider interdisciplinary team at the NRH. Overall I really enjoyed my time working with Ability Matters and it was great to get back to seeing patients again after the pandemic impacted my studies at university. Show less

I worked at the COVID-19 testing site at the start of the pandemic, my role was to organise and direct healthcare staff and patients as they came for testing. This took place at temporary sites in Newtownards MOT centre and Ards Community Hospital, and involved working alongside a multidisciplinary team of nurses, admin staff, medical students and other security officers.
