Interview defendants being held on criminal charges and gather basic demographic information, as well as names and phone numbers of people who can verify the information disseminated by the defendant. Request the Probable Cause Statement and make note of the circumstances surrounding the alleged criminal activity. Research criminal history through MULES, NCIC, and through the court websites in various states, then compile a Criminal History spreadsheet detailing filing date, case #, charge, jurisdiction, and final disposition, including any Failure to Appear and Probation revocations. I then make a recommendation to the court, based upon the defendant's criminal history and circumstances of the instant offense, on the defendant's risk for Failure to Appear for court and risk to commit new criminal offenses if released. The recommendations are: 1) Release on OR (Own Recognizance) Bond; 2) OR Bond w/ Pretrial Supervision; or 3) Detain pending bond.If the defendant is released to Pretrial Supervision, it is my responsibility to supervise the Conditions of Release. These may include drug/alcohol testing, substance abuse treatment, domestic violence classes, electronic monitoring, curfew, weekly reporting, appearing for court, etc. If the defendant fails to abide by conditions ordered by the court, I file a Violation Report and make a recommendation as to action to be taken by the court - continue on conditions, Show Cause Hearing, Issue a Capias Warrant, or revocation of OR Bond and Pretrial Supervision.
