  The main focus of my research is to develop an optimisation tool capable of reducing the potential carbon emissions of new ship designs by offering reduced resistance through the use of improved hull form design techniques. The tool examines both incremental improvements through refinements in conventional hull forms, and radical changes by exploring new blue-sky operational procedures such as reductions in ballast loading and extreme changes in operational trim angles.As part of the EPSRC funded Low Carbon Shipping project I have experienced working as part of a wider team involving partners from industry, as well as other universities and have attended a number of conferences related to this project.   Whilst working on my PhD, I was involved in the teaching of a number of undergraduate classes. Starting as an assistant in 2010, in the following years I moved onto being directly responsible for a second year class teaching the fundamentals of the Maxsurf Software suite. This class covers the initial design and fairing of a vessel, modification of an existing hull form and basic hydrostatic and hydrodynamic analysis. A third year class expands on this knowledge and covers more detailed analysis of a bulk carrier, giving a more complete view of the design cycle of a ship. Show less
