I provided the expertise to enable the sea-fastening and mobilisation of the Wind Turbine foundations and installation equipment on the MPI Discovery Vessel for client EON for the Rampion project. I assisted the fabricator with build sequence and temporary installation steelwork. I was responsible for the design of structures necessary to support the decommissioning of 2 No. Wind Turbines at the Robin Rigg Offshore Wind Farm, 3 No. Met Masts at Scarweather, Amrum bank and Humber Gateway for the client EON utilising the MPI Adventure jack up vessel. Separate structures compliant with Eurocode were required for the Blades, Nacelles, Towers, TP’s and Monopiles. I produced the calculations and reports while translating the information to the draughting department for the production of fabrication drawings. I prepared rigging calculations to enable recovered WTG structures to be lifted. I successfully liaised with the Marine Warranty Surveyor regarding technical queries. I supported the mobilisation/ demobilisation of the vessel through on site presence solving issues as they arose.

For clients Subsea 7, Technip, SBM France, BP, Shell, Conoco Philips and Bard I recognised the Vessel preparation or modification required to support new equipment to perform the project specific task. Structures such as Mezzanine ROV Decks, A-Frame Support Structures, Sheave Towers, Diverters, Chutes, Cable Baskets and Buoy Pens were examples of my work. All design was undertaken in line with AISC/ DNV/ LRS/ ABS codes. Calculations and checks were undertaken in Staad, MathCAD or by hand where applicable. FEA was utilised with complex structures. All equipment/ structural designs were subject to accelerations, wave and wind loading and impact resistance where necessary. My role also included supervising works at site, the monitoring and nurturing of graduate Engineers along with supervision of draftsmen.

Upon receipt of the client brief, I developed and designed the brownfield works required to fixed offshore platforms in the North Sea. I was responsible for estimating resources and time necessary to complete the upgrade or repair. Researching the existing structure, utilising existing drawings and offshore site visits I identified the works necessary and progressed design solutions. I performed detailed designs in Staad or by hand and verified colleague Engineers calculations to ensure structural competence. I instructed the team of draftsmen to produce construction drawings showing the detail to structures such as derricks, skid beams, module walls and floors, pipes, cable and HVAC supports and other structural elements. All design work was to AISC and British Standards where applicable. I produced Work packs detailing the necessary works to complete the task. Clients and projects included Talisman Claymore platform Drilling module upgrade, Apache Alpha and Bravo singular element upgrades (runway beams, platforms, equipment supports), Talisman Fulmar Skid Beam repair and upgrade and BP Clair platform pipe handling system study.

Sea Dragon SD01 and SD02 - I was appointed as member of a task force for the phase two structural design for two semi-submersible oil rigs, Sea Dragon 1 and 2. I produced detailed calculations (by hand and in STAAD) for elements such as mud tanks, equipment supports, platforms, stairs and decks. Consideration was made to “listing” and “survival” load conditions in all designs. All design was to AISC code. During the project lifetime I led a team to facilitate the design and modification of the existing bulkheads and decks to provide the structural detail for all penetrations; piping, electrical and HVAC. This included liaising with other departments and clients, preparing estimates for resources and programming time to complete. Lucite International - I developed a structural frame solution at a Teesside chemical plant to aid in the removal and replacement of an expansion bellows within an existing pipeline. The work involved liaising with the client, preparing estimated costs, performing calculations to BS5950 to prove structural adequacy and transmitting design information to draftsmen. Qatalum Aluminum Smelter Plant – I prepared designs for buildings, pipelines and pipe supports at an Aluminum smelter plant in the Middle East. I created verifiable designs for structures to comply with the specification for wind/sand pressures, material grades, allowable pipe deflection criteria etc. Genzyme – provided structural advice to client regarding a proposed pipeline extension at an existing chemical plant in South East England. I produced various schemes for costing purposes. I was involved in developing the apprentices structural design knowledge.
