Bryan Galvin
Ben has an expert knowledge of many technologies. While working with Ben, I saw how he can work with stake holders to deliver complex and robust solutions that meet business needs. Ben's system design and architecture skills make him an invaluable asset and I learned so much working with him
Conor Smyth
As a member of my senior team, Ben played a pivotal role in leading digital innovation, research and geospatial application services development within our national spatial data infrastructure (SDI) – which at the time, meant that Ben worked on highly innovative and novel developments. Ben was instrumental in effecting our transition from desktop to mobile/cloud applications as well as played a central advisory and support role in internationally important research initiatives in the Geospatial technology domain. His professionalism, skills and competencies as the lead of the software engineering/development function (and team) were recognised by all not only in EDINA, but wider across the University and beyond. Ben forever demonstrated his appetite for learning – inclusive of his own external promotion, as well as applying new standards (OGC) and technologies to support an evolving ecosystem of applications that truly enhanced end user experiences within and across UK academia. As a member of my management team, Ben – consistently demonstrated true professionalism, was consistently a key and knowledgeable contributor and importantly, provided me (and indeed his team) with endless support and counsel. Ben uniquely is most eloquent in translating complex technical concepts to others and his personality and leadership traits always ensured that Ben was widely respected as well as listened to. Ben was very much a key asset in my team and I have always been indebted to him for his contribution and support as well as acknowledge the impact that he and his team made during my tenure as Head of Research and Geodata Services at EDINA.

Leading a team of IT professionals (software developers, business analysts, project managers and testing/3rd line support) who maintain and develop IT systems and software critical to the operation of Scotland's justice system. I was responsible for developing the solutions architecture and software development practises within the group. I was required to provide input into financial forecasts and manage expenditure within my section. I sat on several internal Project Boards to represent Information Services on major corporate initiatives, as well as representing the organisation at external Board and procurement panels with justice sector partners. Workgroup Leader Software Engineering
-
Jan 2008 - Oct 2016
At EDINA I led the software engineering activity for the Geo Services and Research group (a team of ten software engineers). The team delivered high-demand geospatial national services such as Digimap, as well as contributing to research projects and developing innovative software solutions for the higher/further education and schools sectors. Projects I had a pivotal role in developing included Fieldtrip GB (a mobile platform for field studies), Curious Edinburgh (an iOS guided tour app using Wordpress as a backend), Edinburgh Cityscope (a cloud workbench designed for teaching and research using technologies such as Docker Swarm and JupyterHub). I engaged in exploring, evaluating and incubating new technologies and pursuing the use of emerging trends into services and project concepts. I have been involved in horizon scanning and trying to understand how technologies such as Augmented Reality, cloud computing and Jupyter notebooks could be harnessed for teaching and learning and research.
