As a full-time employee at THD my responsibilities were widened beyond just teaching to also being the co-ordinator of the English courses at the institute. This meant managing the English tutors, making sure student outcomes were uniform throughout parallel classes and ensuring adequate communication among staff throughout the semester and leading up to the examination period.

Although I was granted a second year through the scholarship programme, I was looking for a position with more responsibility. Knowing this, a staff member in Munich recommended me for a position at DIT.While still working in Munich, I started working at DIT when the summer semester commenced as an English tutor and was responsible for 2 classes. This included lesson preparation, classroom management as well as assessment preparation and evaluation. As a part of DIT policy, student evaluations were carried out in each class and I was subsequently given a full-time position.

      • May 2015 - Jun 2017

During the refugee crisis of 2015, an email was sent to all staff at DIT asking if they could help local organisations in any way. I contacted local charities in Landshut and was put in contact with Haus International, an organisation that helps people of various backgrounds integrate into society through integration programmes, language courses and social events. Through the developments of 2015, the organisation was put under extreme strain and was looking for additional teaching staff for refugees who were not yet officially "approved". Initially classes were team taught and eventually I was given my own classes. Classes were extremely mixed in terms of background, age, ability and size. Ranging from completely illiterate to university graduates, classes were always dynamic and challenging.

I was given this placement after applying for a scholarship through the Goethe Institute in Australia. The scholarship placement programme is designed to supply German schools with native speakers and gives the recipient the opportunity to take part in and explore the German school system. During my placement I was allowed to take part in any English classes with some teachers stipulating what was to be taught and others leaving it open. Lesson preparation was my responsibility as well as classroom management. During my time at the school I was also allowed to observe other classes and was able to see a wide range of teaching skills and methods for varying levels of ability.
