    • First Mate
      • Jul 2018 - Nov 2018

After finishing my Masters I decided to help out a befriended skipper and work on his ship as first mate. Tasks were similar to my previous work on the clipper "Grote Beer", but I was able to take more responsibilities and learn more about the route planning, maneuvering as well as maintenance. For my thesis work I researched the temporal and spatial distribution of the Atlantic Seabob shrimp in Suriname. The research included both demanding sampling campaigns on the coastal mudflats and in mangrove creeks, as well as laboratory work. I performed the statistical analysis of the data I obtained with Rstudio, as well as Primer7. During this short internship I participated in the project: Communication concerning climate change in coastal communities (KliWaKom), which focussed on the German coast of the Baltic Sea. I carried out a number of supporting tasks and could gain an insight in the work of a Non-profit organization. I was able to learn about grant applications and the process to set up joint international projects. • First Mate on a traditional sailing ship
      • Jul 2015 - Sep 2016

For two sailing seasons I worked as first mate aboard the three mast clipper "Grote Beer". The ship is providing sailing tours for tourists on the dutch inland waters. My main tasks as first mate were management, guidance and explanation of all sailing processes aboard, maintenance of the ship as well as other service tasks. Furthermore I gave explanations concerning the biological processes and ecological importance of the Waddensea to the guests. The research I carried out as my bachelor thesis project for Waterschap Noorderzijlvest was part of the programme "Ruim Baan Voor Vissen". Together with a fellow student I research the effectivity and efficiency of two fish passages in the north of the province Groningen. The project included a great amount of field work through which I learned the importance to stay flexible and adapt to unexpected situations. Skills I broadened through this research project are next to others: - independently setting up and carrying out research - statistical analysis with the programme SPSS - scientific writing - time management - teamwork Show less

I decided to carry out the second mandatory internship of my Bachelor Programme in Chile. The research I focussed on at the Coastal marine research station was titled "Influence of the gastropod Tegula tridentata on the morphology of kelp Lessonia trabeculata". With this project I was involved in reseach diving for the first time and gained hands on expierience in designing experiments with living organisms. Through the educational programme of the station with the name "Chile es mar" I also discovered my interest in environmental education. Furthermore I learned basic Spanish during the periode of my internship. Show less

During events at the university, such as open days, as well as at job and study fairs in Germany I informed young people about the possibility to study at Van Hall Larenstein. I gave information about the different courses the univeristy offers, as well as about other aspects of studentlife in the Netherlands. This position taught me to approach students, actively listen and made me better at speaking in public. • Research Internship
      • Mar 2013 - Jul 2013

During my bachelor I was doing an internship at the Marine Biology Station in Piran, which is part of the Slowenian National Institute of Biology. During the five month I spent at the institute I carried out a research with the title "Investigation of Pollution Effects Along the Slovenian Coast by the Use of Biomarkers from the Mediterranean Mussel (Mytilus Galloprovincialis)". I was able to collect the mussles in the field, dissecting and test them in the laboratory, as well as evaluate the data I gained. I could gain a first insight in chemical lab work and learned to organize my own research. Show less
