Spent a summer in the Sports Structures team in AECOM for two months getting involved in numerous projects. Roles and Responsibilities: - Used SCIA, a computer analysis software to model a steel structure to support a 25m pool, spanning over a 35m high void present between two hotels in the new Hong Kong Third Runway Concourse (TRC). Designing members and forces to optimise the size and location. Ensuring it satisfies the deflection limits of pools for drainage purposes. - Steel connection design in the roof frame for the TRC project, using LIMCON, a specialised connection design tool. - Produced numerous excel spreadsheets to evaluate specific loads applied by the CDS (contractor designed steel) to members throughout the TRC steel roof. Spent a year in the Bridges sector, with 10 months in the London Highways team, involved in assessing TfL’s highway structures throughout NW London. The remaining 2 months in a tender design team, working on new bridge proposals. Roles and Responsibilities: - Completed bridge inspections and produced Principal Inspection reports, using site notes and photographs to determine the severity of defects, specify remedial works and assess the overall condition of the structure. - Used AutoCAD to denote testing locations, along with carrying out LUSAS training for structural assessments. - Special Inspection Testing Plans (SITP) specifying the type and locations of testing to deteriorating structures and define a scope for remedial works. Created an SITP for Blackwall Tunnel Vent Shaft, understanding the pre-stressed concrete skirt and tapered reinforced shaft and accounting for its Grade II listing. - Special Inspection Report for Dog Lane Arches, a 6 span bridge, where testing had been carried out to the reinforced concrete soffit. Calculated strengths used for the structural assessment and analysed the data using a spreadsheet. - Produced buildability report for a new crossing over Menai Strait, which assessed the construction feasibility of a balanced cantilever. - Carried out preliminary design calculations for a suspension bridge and created AutoCAD general arrangements. - Responsible for producing elements of a tender document for a new confidential bridge worth in the region of $4 billion. I volunteered weekly at a homeless drop-in called The Link in central Croydon where I spent the evening preparing meals and serving drinks to the guests. This required me to be confident and communicate in a clear and sensitive way with a range of individuals.
