Becky Corrigan was my 12th Grade AP Biology Instructor at Lincoln Park High School from 2012-2013. She was an inspiration and down to earth, and most importantly treated her students with respect due to a mutual passion for Biology. That's important to note because as a recent high school student (2013) and a product of Chicago Public Schools, I can attest that most of the time students were treated more like unruly children and not young adults. Ms. Corrigan was completely different from any teacher I ever had in her approach to her students on a professional level and on a personal one. I want to point out that what I remember most about Ms. Corrigan was her successful and memorable approach to teaching concepts over a broad spectrum of curricula and the fact that she believed in me and supported my passions to become a biologist. I wasn't doing well in the class for mental health reasons -- I was actually failing it -- but we would have conversations about real life science applications, natural resource and animal conservation, and what I wanted to do as a woman in science. She gave me a textbook that was sent to the school as a product sample and wasn't going to be used. It was titled "Zoology," and I remember telling her that's what I wanted to go to college for. I was so excited that day. I still have that book, and used it in college for my Animal Diversity Laboratory. We need more teachers like this.

In this role, I have taught general biology, advanced biology, AP biology, environmental science, history & ecology of the Chicago River, and food: science, systems & society in the upper school. I regularly attend professional development in order stay current in my content area as well as learn new teaching techniques to incorporate into my current course load. I have developed curricular units during and after many of my PD sessions; I am currently a co-author of 2 cases in a problem solving e-book published by Botanical Society of America, as a result of 2 2-week long summer sessions at Texas A&M. I have also been a contributing author to the teacher's addition of the textbook: Principles of Life. In addition, I have been an active member of the AP community by participating in multiple AP biology teachers' workshops as well as serving as an AP exam reader for the last 11 years, serving in leadership roles for the last 6 years. Finally, I have spent multiple summers with the Friends of the Chicago River as a teacher-trainer, responsible for educating other teachers and helping them bring river education into their classroom. I taught freshman biology and integrated physical science science at Aurora West High School. As a member of the integrated physical science team, I helped develop the course curriculum to align with new state science standards. In addition, I co-developed a biology course intended for struggling and achieving students. This course taught basic scientific skills, critical thinking, and important biological concepts, while encouraging cooperation & collaboration.
