James Crawford

I worked with Barrie Martin during my time at AstraZeneca in a early stage / hit identification group. Barrie was a peer, colleague and friend, who impressed me greatly with his knowledge, work ethic and spirit. During one high priority chemokine inhibitor medicinal chemistry programme, Barrie spotted a previously neglected singleton hit compound that he was subsequently able to develop and progress into the AZ project portfolio, shortly before the closure of the R&D group at Charnwood. Who knows where this attractive (yet toxic) lead may have led were that not the case. He also took up cycling during our short tenure working together, which was a big hit. This turn to fitness also had an impact on his exceedingly strong levels of lab productivity. Barrie was an almost universally well-respected colleague at AZ, and I have followed his career as he made a bold move to Conformetrix/C4X where he took on the crucial role of 'Chief Chemist' and led their early medicinal chemistry efforts & applications of their technology. This led to a number of collaborative efforts with Genentech, and the company has gone from strength to strength since then. This was no surprise to me, chiefly since they have scientists such as Barrie at the helm. I would wholeheartedly recommend Barrie for medicinal chemistry and project leadership roles.

Barrie is a practising medicinal chemist who has worked on many drug discovery projects over several years and in several companies. His experience in the modern aspects of Medicinal Chemistry coupled with strong productivity will make him an asset to any organisation.
