The rise of open source technology around the world has created an upsurge in maker communities across Ghana, inspiring the development of many community projects centered on IOT. There is however a variable in this story that has caused many makers in Ghana great frustrations and has even led to the discontinuity and abandonment of very bright projects: Internet Access. For every project that is deployed, a problem of accessibility is created. Developers have to provide internet access for their IOT kit. I am also a big fan of open source projects and it’s open source projects in Ghana require a lot of time, and money. The people contributing to it in our part of the world are mostly young people like myself, the amateurs are coming up with great innovations but are not in the economic position to bring most of them into fruition. So we have a lot of passive hobbyists. Phase One is to provide a cluster of Low Powered Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) for wireless battery operated Things, and building a city-wide proof of concept.
