I started working with Bal in 2007 shortly after the Qatar Telecom (Qtel) Group acquired the Wataniya group of companies. Bal occupied a unique position as the CFO of Wataniya in Kuwait - the second largest cellular operator in the country and the parent company of Wataniya subsidiaries in North Africa, the Middle East and elsewhere. As a new international operator integrating a large acquisition, the Qtel Group had numerous projects to complete ranging from rights issues, credit ratings and bond offerings to large-scale ERP implementations and IPOs, most of which were being done for the first time. Bal and his staff maintained positive, collaborative working relationships to get things done and occasionally contributed a sense of humour at challenging moments.
