We are conducting experimental studies on the application of wind power in harsh conditions. The study aims to reduce and prevent the impact of extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain, hail/dust, and gusts on a wind turbine and its components. Mitigating the effects of harsh weather can lead to decreased operational and maintenance costs, more efficient turbine control strategies, and increased power production. This will be accomplished by conducting controlled physical experiments simulating the conditions above and proposing novel strategies to drastically reduce or entirely prevent damage. To understand the characteristics of the flow, we use Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Particle Tracking velocimetry (PTV). Show less
