The Youth Plug-In Initiative was created by the European Union and the African Union and is led by 36 Youth Fellows that represent both continents and the diaspora. The initiative aims at ensuring a more meaningful and comprehensive inclusion of Youth as "agenda setters” in the run up to and at the 5th AU-EU Summit, which theme was “Investing in Youth for a Sustainable Future”. Out of 7500 applicants, I was selected together with 35 other young fellows to continue to work more intensively on the Abidjan Youth Declaration that we drafted at the 4th Africa-Europe Youth Summit. The goal has been to develop deliverables through the proposal of concrete initiatives and solutions to the challenges young people face.My focus as part of the Culture Cluster, was around the contextualization of history through a youth-led heritage space and digital archive, in order to address the legacy of colonization and its impact on both continents as well as creating a space for young people to imagine a different future based on well-informed exploration of artefacts and cultural legacy. I also pushed for the professionalization of The Arts, believing that talent is not lacking but true integration of The Arts can make a difference i.e minimum wage and health care benefits as well as more tailored and accessible capacity building for youth. The outcome of the YPII is the Youth Agenda that we presented to all State Leaders at the AU-EU Summit. Further to this the AU-EU Youth Cooperation Hub has been established as a follow-up to the Plug-In. The AU-EU Youth Cooperation Hub, is about prototyping and testing approaches and ideas in reality; piloting them on a small scale but with maximum impact, visibility and result-evidence. 42 young people from both continents, aged between 20 and 35 years, were selected from over 1700 applications and now have the opportunity to create projects worth €10 million that will be piloted across 6 thematic areas, through civil society organisations.

    • Community Facilitator, Social Change Strategist

Ubele - Swahili for 'The Future'.The Ubele Initiative will bring together different generations from African and Caribbean communities in the UK to undertake the work that needs to be done to ensure they remain strong and viable in the years to come.I contributed to the development and facilitation of community dialogue sessions on issues which affect the African Caribbean Diaspora UK. Informing the strategic development of the organisation and engaging with young adults (under 30 years of age) in the organisation to ensure the voice of the young is central part of the added value I brought to Ubele. My role was also to create international partnerships and widening presence in youth networks as well as mobilising emerging leaders to participate in Intergenerational dialogue. This work through Ubele is specifically looking at the rights of African Caribbean Diaspora UK in terms of community asset building (access to public space) and developing infrastructure to support long term goals in relation to our many ‘stuck issues’ that include institutional racism, lack of physical legacy, identity, mobility, cultural sensitivity and understanding, empowerment, Leadership development and advocacy for Women’s political participation and social recognition.Ubele's mission is to provide an innovative action-learning programme of leadership development and social change for British African and Caribbean people through working inter-generationally to secure the future of our communities. In the first program in 2014, I worked with TOWIEthics as a participant in their heritage lottery funded training program to encourage young adults to participate more with the heritage sector. We looked at archive and curation, archaeology, the history of protest and many interesting aspects. This was in collaboration with Bishopsgate Institute and Museum of London. For the past year and a half i have been an event producer with The Only Way Is Ethics- A creative heritage project in partnership with Emergency Exit Arts and Bishopsgate Institute producing a series of events and workshops for key stage 2 inspired by Bishopsgate's World Citizens collection. This project explored Radical Citizenship by encouraging youth engagement in political action, creating a sense of ownership of public space and providing a platform to express social and political views. We were commissioned by Southbank Centre to create and facilitate workshops for their ‘Be The Change’ event and ‘WHY’ festival, which were both very successful. I also co produced ‘Sound of Resistance’ at Autograph ABP exploring music as a form of cultural resistance with live music, a cultural resistance workshop and discussion on how creativity can be used to advocate for our rights and why possibilities were their of new subcultures that had a sense of uniqueness. Also ‘Should I stay or should i go?’ at London School of Economics Library exploring the EU referendum in UK and what Europe means to us through silent disco-a mash up of euro-pop and political speeches on EU, a giant GUESS WHO? Game with pictures of the current leaders of EU nations and facts on points such as agriculture and climate.

Afruika Bantu was a Community Activist whose vision of assisting those unable to achieve in mainstream education led to the founding of this Saturday school in 1999. It aims to raise the confidence and aspirations of young people from BME backgrounds, encouraging a positive work ethic and inspiring them to achieve. I taught Maths, English and Science to Key stage 1&2. I reviewed the curriculum and created lessons in accordance to the academic year, finding ways to engage the children, some with leaning difficulties, and implementing routine and structure to their learning that could support them in exams and their day to day to school life. I also chaired teacher meetings, organised fun days and achievement events. I had regular communication with the families, updating them on the children's progress and encouraging them to be more involved in the learning process at home.
