Over the course of my placement, I was entrusted with the responsibility of developing a new and novel component of an existing Operational Analysis model to allow the detailed representation of the effect of directed energy (laser) on unmanned air targets. The work involved a significant amount of research into directed energy technologies, physics and atmospheric effects; the abstraction of these to a suitable level of representation within the parent model; and the successful development of a prototype in MATLAB, along with its associated user documentation. The model was successfully demonstrated to the evident delight of the modelling team. My work will be taken forward as a key element in the development of a unique Operational Analysis capability for QinetiQ and, potentially, the wider MOD community.

Year in Industry
-
Sep 2014 - Sep 2015
As part of my year industry I took part in trials planning for customer funded projects, including scheduling, risk assessment and accreditation. This included setting up simple trials area covering engineering hygiene, hazard analysis and mitigation. I also created various image processing MATLAB models and researched different techniques to advise and make recommendations on the effectiveness of various algorithms. I also produced GUIs, helped write technical documentation and attended customer and business strategy meetings.
