Experience

    • Pre-Doctoral Instructor
      • Sep 2018 - Present

I have been the Instructor of Record for the following MPA core courses:• Spring 2021, PUBPOL 513: Public Policy Analysis• Winter 2021, PUBPOL 517: Economics for Policy Analysis and Management II• Winter 2020, PUBPOL 517: Economics for Policy Analysis and Management II• Autumn 2018, PUBPOL 516: Economics for Policy Analysis and Management ISelect evaluations from students:"For a 3-hour night course, Austin is capable of keeping the entire room engaged throughout the whole session, which is incredibly difficult for most. The use of practice problems and engaging the class kept us at attention. He is also very clear, deliberate, and patient with his students & their questions. He is one of the best instructors I've had so far at my time in Evans.""Austin did and excellent job of teaching the course concepts and then relating them to experiences/situations reflected in our society. The reviews before the midterm and final were very interesting and organic - we were each given a current events article and were charged to come up with an economic 'test question' using the context of the article and concepts from the class. Not only was this a novel idea that required interaction among class members but it also encouraged critical thinking and an expanding of perspective relative to classroom concepts. Genius!""I have historically struggled with economics, both in 516 and in undergrad, and with mathematics altogether. This class is the first time I have a confident understanding in economics curriculum and it's because of Austin Sell. The organized structure of lectures and Austin's use of examples made this complex subject significantly clearer. The relevance of the quiz example problems (both from how we first learned it and how we're tested on it) allowed me, for the first time in the three economics classes I've now taken, to approach studying economics outside of class with an understanding of what the concept was and how to operationalize concepts."
