For over five years I have worked as an Education Specialist with Fresh Start in Education. In this role I have undertaken engagement work and delivered education to young people missing education for broad ranging reasons. Although I specialise in education for children/young people with an Autism Spectrum diagnosis, I have successfully delivered education to a broad range of individuals, including those who with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, developmental delays, ADHD, communication disorders, complex medical conditions and many more complex conditions. I have particularly enjoyed being able to form relationships with students who have previously experienced negative outcomes in education, helping to them to rediscover confidence in themselves as learners and supporting them to develop skills and confidence to reengage with education. I have found that every individual has the capacity to progress with their learning if they are approached in a manner that suits their learning style. The challenge of finding the teaching style that suits each student is part of the job that gives me a great deal of satisfaction in the first instance. Seeing a student then develop capacity and resilience to cope with a broader range of teaching styles, so that they are able to apply the progress they have made with me in other educational settings, reassures me that I have provided them with skills that can sustain them through their educational career beyond the highly specialised intervention that was required when I first started working with them. I know that I have done my job well when the student no longer needs my support, and I am fortunate to have experienced this on many occasions in my work with Fresh Start in Education. Show less
