Diogo's professionalism passion and expertise are some of the attributes I will never forget. He simply kindled a flame in me once he became my supervisor, which has continued to positively impact my productivity up to this point.

Eng.

GiveDirectly is driving a re-evaluation of the assumptions underlying international philanthropy with a provocative model: we deliver donations directly to the extreme poor and let them decide what to do with them. This approach builds on two converging trends: the rapid spread of electronic last-mile payments solutions in the emerging markets, and the large body of experimental evidence showing that direct transfers are as or more cost-effective at reducing poverty than more traditional, top-down approaches. GiveDirectly’s field operations utilize state-of-the-art technology and business processes to deliver transfers securely, efficiently, and transparently. Our unorthodox approach – allowing the poor, and not the donor, to choose where they invest – has prompted debate in the popular press and among policy makers. GiveDirectly has been featured on NPR’s This American Life , and in Foreign Affairs , The Economist , and The New York Times . It was named one of the Top 10 Most Innovative Companies in Finance by FastCompany , one of the 25 Most Audacious Companies by Inc. , and one of GiveWell’s top-rated charities for 4 years running. The Program Manager (PM) owns the overall process for field operations, including driving & tracking performance of field teams; driving achievement of targets; coordinating with local partners and governments; building a culture of mentorship and professional development; and identifying opportunities for risk mitigation and process improvement. The PM serves as the key “eyes and ears” resource in Mozambique for GiveDirectly and is responsible for regularly synthesizing updates on operational health. Show less

    • Programme Manager - Keeping Food Markets Working Initiative (KFMW)
      • Aug 2020 - Jun 2021

In response to the global pandemic, GAIN has developed a programme of targeted support to help sustain core food systems, workers and markets during COVID-19 emergency. Poor diets are already responsible for the majority of the world’s global burden of disease: the COVID-19 virus and the control responses to it threaten secondary effects of increased food prices, food shortages, civil unrest and exacerbate existing inequalities (based on, for example, income, gender, and ethnicity). OECD countries have recognised this and acted boldly to protect food systems, but most governments in Africa and Asia do not have the resources to do the same. The potential strangulation of food systems from collapsing food value chains, including the devastating impact on markets and effective demand, is capable of enormously amplifying health and social stability problems – threatening a food crisis and a “second wave” of disease and public health problems affecting the most vulnerable due to hunger and deteriorating diets.GAIN’s goal is to mitigate the collapse of food systems by supporting food markets and the value chain companies while strengthening equitable policy responses that can be delivered quickly to support continuity and protect sustainability of key workers in food systems in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs), especially in Africa and Asia, which face potentially catastrophic supply and demand disruption. GAIN will achieve this by establishing an emergency response programme to assess and address the challenges facing the food system. This programme has the overarching goal of mitigating the risk of economic collapse of food systems in order to sustain the availability and affordability of nutritious and safe foods, and contribute to lowering the burden of ill-health, particularly for the most vulnerable. A study on National Iodine Deficiency conducted in 2011-2012 in women of reproductive age (15-49 years), classified Mozambique as mildly iodine deficient. At provincial level, the provinces of Tete, Inhambane and Maputo City have adequate iodine nutrition, while Niassa, Nampula, Zambézia, Manica and Sofala have mild, and Cabo Delgado has moderate iodine deficiency. An earlier study on iodine deficiency in school aged children (6-12 years) conducted in 2004 likewise classified the country as mildly iodine deficient. The 2008 MICS and 2011 DHS surveys show that the number of households consuming iodized salt has decreased from 58% in 2008 to 45% in 2011. The low consumption of iodized salt is mainly caused by lack of availability. This downward trend in access to iodized salt in Mozambique can adversely affect iodine nutrition at the national and subnational levels.GAIN is currently implementing a project on Universal Salt Iodization , with focus on industry compliance, under a grant from the Government of Netherlands, a partnership corporation agreement with UNICEF, to leverage these activities. Under the LSFF portfolio, GAIN also supports the government to strengthen their capacity to improve food safety and quality, based on the outcome of the 2017 sector assessment studies of 11 different products and the umbrella legal framework assessment. Specifically, GAIN provides technical assistance to the government to facilitate multi-sectoral collaboration between government entities and support to the National Laboratory for Hygiene Water and Foods to develop their analytical and laboratory capability for food safety and the National Inspection Body for Economic Activities to improve their inspection capacity.Report to the Country Director, monitor and manage the progress of USI and Mozambique National Food Fortification and FSQ activities in Mozambique, and coordinate all field activities according to the project implementation timeframe Show less
