Wight Horse is a non-profit organization that aims to relieve medical expense debt among the population of middle-class, health-insured individuals with chronic illness, while also prioritizing educating the general population on health insurance coverage, including its importance, how it works, and how to obtain a coverage plan that best suits your needs. My internship through Wight Horse is an opportunity to apply my background of public health knowledge in a professional setting as well as develop new skills as a public health professional. I utilize my public health background and skills to execute research relevant to Wight Horse, identify and implement effective health education and health promotion strategies, and collaborate with other public health professionals to inspire new ideas and assist our team in reaching our goals. A major aspect of this experience has included developing a more adequate understanding of the health insurance system in the United States in order to be able to effectively educate the population on this information through educational social media posts and infographics. This experience has also increased my exposure to understanding how a non-profit organization operates, implementing effective fundraising strategies, and experiencing a real-world professional public health setting working alongside other professionals.
