I have had the privilege of knowing Tharanee on both a professional and personal level. I first met him when he was a new graduate student in the Biology Department. I was immediately drawn to Tharanee not only because of his obvious intellect, but also because of his passion for neuroscience. As he perfected the nuances of neuronal and astrocyte cell cultures, he taught me a great deal about the merits of different spike sorting methods and waveform analyses. One thing about Tharanee: he will happily take time to discuss the merits of the current scientific literature; and when you need help in implementation, he will be the first to come to your aid. Over the years, I have seen him face numerous challenges, and overcome them because of another unique quality – he is willing to seek the advice of colleagues and outside sources for solutions. In the interest of solving a problem quickly, he will easily put aside his ego and reevaluate the current situation. This is indeed a rare quality in a scientist. He is a unique individual with a combination of passions for science , medicine, and quantitative analysis. I am convinced that he would be in his element at the confluence of these fields.

I've had the pleasure of not only observing Tharanee as a graduate researcher but also as a brilliant student in a graduate elective I taught last spring semester (Biology of Stem Cells). As it is characteristic of outstanding graduate students, Tharanee's work ethics and critical thinking is second-to-none. He also effectively combines his training in medicine with his knowledge in neuroscience to come up with thorough analysis of complex biological questions. In addition to his intellectual skills Tharanee is a very friendly and humble person. I wish him the best and I see nothing but a successful career as a physician scientist.
