  It supervises and monitors the protection of the rights of persons with mental disorders, such as the right to decent living conditions in Mental Health Units, the right to specialised individual treatment, the right to challenge involuntary hospitalisation in court, the right to speak privately with a lawyer, the right to access their data , the right to protect their property, the right to social reintegration. In particular, the Special Committee: - Receives complaints, reports or grievances from any citizen, organisation, body or any Commission or Authority - Periodically visits Mental Health Services - Carries out, on its own initiative or following a complaint, emergency visits to mental health services - Informs citizens about the rights of persons with mental disorders by any appropriate means, such as the publication of information leaflets, press releases or television spots - Receives and further investigates the annual mandatory reports from the managers of mental health services or egal deputies - Submits annual reports on its work to the Chairperson of the Committee for the Protection of the Rights of Healthcare Recipients - Submits a report whenever it finds a violation of the rights of persons with mental disorders to the Chairperson of the Committee for the Protection of the Rights of Healthcare Recipients, who shall take further legal action when necessary - Intervenes whenever it finds a violation of the rights of persons with mental disorders, makes recommendations and submits a report to the competent body for criminal or disciplinary proceedings - Organises, supervises and coordinates, in cooperation with the Bar Associations of the place of residence or stay of persons with mental disorders, voluntary legal assistance in matters relating to the protection of their rights, in accordance with the principles of organisation of the Athens Bar Association's legal assistance department.
