Athanase is a truly remarkable leader who exhibits integrity, a strong work ethic and a commitment to making the organization better. During Athanase’s first year at ALARM, we worked very closely on a strategic planning initiative for the organization. During his last two years, I served as a board member and then Board Chair for the US ALARM organization. I was so impressed by the energy that Athanase had and his concern for the organization and its staff. He is also one of the most courageous leaders I have known. He did not hesitate to make staff changes when necessary to improve the integrity and overall operation of the organization. It was a joy to work with Athanase. He has an infectious laugh and he puts others at ease. He is also strategic in his thinking and his leadership. I know any organization could benefit from his leadership.

Providing Servant Leadership to the country team of national staff and expatriates through motivational and encouraging support, managing multisector programs and allocated resources with utmost professionalism and integrity. This is a great opportunity to put in play a wealth of academic knowledge and work-related experience, competences, and capabilities for high satisfaction of donors and the best interest of all beneficiaries. While Tearfund had phased out its emergency program plan and laid off majority of its staff (Nationals and expatriates) leaving 6 most essential staff (3 experts’ and 3 National Staff), I am currently running a three years Women Economic Empowerment Project funded by DFID with a team of 8 expatriates and 97 national staff totaling 105. The project encompasses several components such as women literacy/numeracy, Village Saving, and Credit Association-VSLAs, Business Training in Management of Income Generating Activities-IGA, Vocational Training Skills (Tailoring, Soap making, chicken rearing, cookery, and restaurant business), and cash transfer as seed capital to initiate or expand 10,000 women' IGAs. There is also another component of community-based dialogues for women protection against Sexual and Gender-based Violence-SGBV using the approach of Transforming Masculinities. In less than two years, the project has already made its tangible impact among its women beneficiaries and their respective families. Further to the running of the project, I spearheaded and coordinated the development of a new country strategy that will guide the next six years of programming in the country. I have successfully trained and graduated a cohort of Church Facilitators using the Church and Community Mobilization Process modules.

    • Africa Regional Director/Vice President for Programme Development
      • Jan 2015 - Feb 2018

Provide leadership and line management to eight different Country Directors (Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo-DRC, Uganda, Sudan, South Sudan, and Kenya) for developing communication and networking strategies. Serve the Africa based staff and Africa Board of Directors by providing resources, services, and expertise in fundraising and grant writing. Travel to national offices to build relationships with the staff, be acquainted with field projects and programs, train staff in project design, implementation, Monitoring & Evaluation, fundraising, and grant development/writing. Mobilize and coordinate fundraising activities by staff, volunteers, partners, associates, and board members in Africa, Europe, and Asia. Work with the Director of Finance and Administration in the development of the annual budget and assure proper financial reporting and practices for all the dimensions. Review monthly financials and interface with the President/CEO and Director of Finance regarding management, implementation, and follow-up of funded programs and projects. Upon assessment of the competences and skills among senior staff at Country levels and the urgent needs to enhance programming for greater impact and growth of funding, I raised funds for staff development and capacity building that helped in engaging them in specialized and well-packaged training workshops. The country directors and all heads of departments were taken through rigorous training of Project cycle management, design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. They were also trained, coached, and mentored in proposal writing and fundraising that yielded fruits within no time. The sources of funds were expanded and a sizeable amount of funds raised, and will continuously do so for many more years. Furthermore, I spearheaded and facilitated various workshops that guided the development of the company’s five years Strategic Plan and aligned all the eight-country strategies to the same.

  • World Concern
    • Ndjamena- Chad
    • Chad Country Director
      • Aug 2010 - Aug 2014

My primary functions were to provide strategic leadership and management to World Concern’s relief and integrated community development work in Chad. There was also a need for planning sectors’ initiatives into a coherent country strategy consistent with organizational priorities. Finally, I was charged with the responsibility to advocate on behalf of an organization’s development goals, building institutional relationships and promoting cooperative program activities. Over the four years I spent in this role, I developed and maintained good working relationships with the government, UN agencies, other NGOs, and community beneficiaries. I facilitated World Concern teamwork with a great sense of the organizational values, mission, and vision through staff weekly meetings to air out all issues affecting the working environment. I increased World Concern annual revenue with one million dollar grant through funding proposals and established partnerships with a long-term commitment to funding the country program over 3 to 5 years. I built trust and unprecedented working relationships with the government that translated into a periodical renewal of three years signed agreement and successfully lead the country transition programs from relief projects in the refugee and IDP camps to the sustainable and community development programs in the villages. I successfully restructured the program team and hired appropriated and right fit skills for better programming and implementation of the activities in the country. At the end of my tenure, I handed over a well-developed five years country strategic Plan, which was to support my successor in enhancing and expanding the country programs.

As a starting job right from school, the major duties included works such as establishing the Regional Office Hub for this organization in my country, initiating and following up on the registration process, setting up the office, and assisting the expatriate staff in renting and setting up their residences. I was also interacting with various government officials at various levels (central and district) to make sure all administrative requirements are fulfilled. I had to Organize an implementers' conference to identify the right fit implementing partners, carrying out a due diligence analysis of the partners' respective project proposals for funding. I was preparing funding MOU and following up on timely funding wire transfer and program commencement. I successfully screened and selected over 20 implementing partners in form of CBOs, FBOs, and NGOs, timely completed due diligence analysis of their project proposals and recommended them for funding. I increased employer's revenue by achieving such a milestone performance enabling a high number of partners to access funding whose percentage was to be paid to my employer's account. I facilitated partners and the country as a whole to access much-needed funding to rebuild the post-genocide Rwanda's social fabric and rural economic development. I successfully managed institutional and wealthy individual funding worth millions of dollars through local and international implementing partners. I indirectly helped hundreds of thousand rural Rwandans getting access to quality services (clean water, clinical and community health, secondary school education, advocacy for legal land rights, and microfinance).
