Schulz Lab - the Neurobiology of Mental Illness - University of TennesseePubertal timing varies between individuals, and undergoing puberty early or late relative to ones peers is associated with increased risk for mental illness. Pubertal onset has advanced substantially in girls in recent decades, yet the neurobiological consequences of undergoing early or late pubertal timing are unknown. We are conducting studies to determine the specific neural consequences of undergoing early or late pubertal timing and to determine the mechanisms controlling the postnatal sensitive period for exposure to steroid hormones.
