At Prism, I'm the leader of a national nonprofit newsroom with a 100% WOC staff covering today's most pressing social justice issues, centered on communities of color, women, and LGBTQ+ people. In my role as EIC, I oversee the editorial, operations, and audience departments and collaborate with development to establish organizational and editorial strategy, priorities, and budgets. Prism reached 6 million people in our first two years of publishing, with stories widely republished in outlets like Bitch Media, Truthout, Scalawag Magazine, and TheGrio. As head of the newsroom, I assign and edit news coverage, enterprise and investigative reporting, commentary, and analysis and oversee the growth of our freelance program dedicated to amplifying diverse voices, which has published news stories, op-eds, and essays by more than 80 BIPOC and LGBTQ+ writers. I've also collaborated with reporters to conceptualize and execute special projects and series on subjects like gendered violence and mass incarceration, sex positivity and the arts, and more, which involves commissioning guest editors, freelance writers, photographers, and illustrators. I also serve as Prism's public face and voice, representing and promoting the brand on TV, radio, podcasts, at conferences, and in trade publications like CJR and Nieman Lab. I've also spearheaded Prism's participation in industry programs including the Texas Tribune Revenue Lab’s Live Events Bootcamp, and the Facebook Journalism Project’s Sustainability Accelerator, which have expanded our capacity for event production and revenue generation.
