This summer I was given the opportunity to work as an exploration geologist in northern Nunavut; giving me experience working and living at a remote camp on a rotating on/off schedule. On a daily basis, travelling by haul road or helicopter, I would visit all operating drills to perform a safety and progress inspection. After inspections were completed, I would work in the core shack alongside other geologists analysis core, typically one geologist per hole. Responsibilities included box end and recovery measurements, joint and fracture analysis, lithology, structure, alteration and weathering descriptions, sample identification, photos and proper labelling. As drilling operations are weather dependant, geologist would occasionally be left without core. During these lulls I was trained on core sample cutting, giving me experience operating a diamond saw and properly packaging and sending core samples to an external lab. Show less
