Msc Thesis
-
Feb 2017 - Sep 2017
Thesis: The embeddedness of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in South African Tour Operators' business practices. This study aimed to provide insight in the level of embedded ness of CSR a s a social practice in the South African tourism industry, the current obstacles of engaging in CSR, and the influence of certification on the institutionalization process of CSR. Practice theory is particularly relevant when obtaining this in-depth information as it shows tour operating as a practice arrangement bundle. Practice theory by Shove, Pantzar & Watson uses the three concepts of meaning, competences, and materials to unpack this bundle. This study shows that there is a similar understanding of CSR among the South African tour operators. However, the companies have translated their understanding of CSR into different ways of doing, which is influenced by their company size, business structure, business strategy, and available resources. This has resulted in the classification of three groups of tour operators, small, medium, and large, that diverge themselves in terms of CSR implementation. These so-called dominant practices orient the ways in which people prioritize and spend their time. Before CSR can be fully considered a dominant practice, CSR needs to be institutionalised. The web of institutionalisation includes multiple elements that lead to routinisation when connected and simultaneously used, can support this process. Full cooperation from diverse stakeholders from different levels is required in order to influence the general meaning, competences, and materials of CSR, to create a similar mind-set, and a shared set of CSR practices in the South African tourism industry. Intern Travelife
-
Sep 2016 - Dec 2016
Travelife for Tour Operators is a leading training, management and certification initiative for tour operators committed to reach a higher sustainability level. With its online reporting system accredited by GSTC, Travelife trains tour operators on sustainability in tourism, supports them worldwide in implementing sustainability practices in their management, and certifies them for third-party verification. Sustainability management is all about commitment and consistent sustainable business practices. This includes their tourism products, how they monitor and manage their impacts, and how they support their suppliers on their road to sustainability. I first started working for Travelife as an intern for my MSc program at Wageningen University. During my internship I started as coordinator for African tour operators, coaching them through the certification report. I have continued working for Travelife and as of January 2018 officially as freelancer in the role of Account Manager Africa. Show less

Thesis: Development of a new community-based ecotourism product for Fair2 in Tanzania. The focus of this thesis was to provide insight in the process of developing community-based ecotourism, and to develop a new community-based ecotourism product for Dutch tour operator Fair2. All the collected data regarding public goods, suitable tour components, and the opinion of the professionals resulted in a new community-based ecotourism product in Tanzania that truly benefits the local communities, provides interaction for the clients, meets Fair2’s vision and needs, and is very interesting for the adventurous traveller that wants to see the backside of Africa and to learn from local cultures. This advice does not only present a new community-based ecotourism product that can be offered to Fair2’s clients but also provides an interesting analysis about the opinions of the locals and professionals on community-based ecotourism.
