Global Lead for Sustainability and Climate
-
Jan 2014 - Jan 2022
Responsible for defining and setting IBM’s research, technical and business strategy in the sustainability and climate space. I lead a global team focussed on developing solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of IBM cloud enterprise offerings. In the process, I work closely with IBM’s worldwide business units to define product roadmaps, transfer research technology and unlock new market opportunities. Earlier, I led a data-driven smarter energy project, where the goal was to reduce the energy consumption incurred by the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system in commercial buildings. I secured multiple client engagements and deployed cloud-based AI-powered technology to yield 15% savings in energy and carbon footprint in office buildings, with near-zero capex requirement. I also led the technology transfer of the solution to the IBM IoT business unit. Under my leadership, our team filed 20+ patents in: (i) the economics and efficacy of solar PV systems and energy storage, (ii) building energy management and (iii) IoT for healthcare applications and enhancing security in enterprise / residential IoT devices and networks. I led the Centre for Energy-Efficient Telecommunications' (CEET) collaboration with Bell Labs to develop and validate models for reducing the energy consumption of telecommunications networks and the Internet. I led a pioneering stream of work to systematically quantify the energy efficiency of using cloud-based applications. This led to the world's first comprehensive model for accurately estimating the energy consumption of Internet equipment such as routers and switches. These activities fed into a global industry-academia initiative called GreenTouch that was instrumental in demonstrating technologies aimed at a 1000x reduction in the energy footprint of the ICT sector compared to 2010 levels. I proposed, designed and demonstrated novel architectures and algorithms for operating high-speed packet buffers (i.e. memory) in Internet routers and switches. I also developed new techniques for managing the energy-performance tradeoffs of residential WiFi networks. These works demonstrated that the corresponding energy footprint can be safely reduced by 10%. The focus of the internship was on understanding and improving the Quality of Experience (QoE) for end-users when video is streamed over a high-speed wireless network (WiMAX). I conducted a detailed performance evaluation study using the WiMAX forum's ns-2 network simulator, resulting in one patent and 2 publications.
