    • Intern
      • Aug 2016 - Nov 2016

As an intern at the Foundation for Peace and Democracy, I performed research into governmental policies and socioeconomic climates of every country in the Western Hemisphere. These investigations were presented in a weekly blog. I was also a foundational piece in the organization's projects and programs, which sought to mitigate injustices around Central America. To support FUNPADEM's initiatives, I performed stakeholder analyses, maintained databases of and contacted relevant actors and donors, worked with other on site organizations and community leaders to adjust projects, translated documents in both English and Spanish and requested funding and assistance from the US State Department. With Higher Achievement, I was given the opportunity to give weekly academic support to and engage in social justice discussion with elementary school students from all four quadrants of DC. During my time with the organization, up to eight students and I would read articles pertaining to social justice issues such as racial or gender-based inequality, poverty, guaranteed freedoms, situations of food security, and environmental racism. We would then discuss these issues, allowing the students to better understand their perceptions of the problems as well as how each issue pertained to their communities and country. This curriculum was focused on not only promoting an understanding of social justice causes among DC’s elementary school students, but developing their belief that they could act as agents of change on the local and national level. Aiding them in essay writing also gave me the privilege of bolstering their capacities of written expression, a skill which was of stressed importance to the future difference-makers. Show less
