  PhD project entitled "Multi-level brain criticality as a mechanism of complex variability in perception and learning": Variability in neuronal activity and behavior is increasingly seen as a sign of criticality—a dynamical state balancing between order and disorder. Interestingly, recent data support an integrative theory of “critical brain dynamics” that links these observations of complex variability. Here, we use computational modelling and neuroimaging to consolidate this theory and understand how criticality shapes perception and learning. The work will enrich contemporary theories of brain function and replace the concept of “noise” in cognitive neuroscience with mechanistic explanations for neuro-cognitive variability. This framework should spur urgently needed biomarkers for personalized medicine and have clinical implications. Show less
