I have recently completed my PhD with a title, "Modelling and investigation of the role of anthropogenic activity on the movement of marine animals." In this role my primary aim has been to use mathematical models and the software matlab to determine the impact of various anthropogenic activities on the behaviour and movement of marine animals. I have attended various conferences as part of the PhD ad have presented my work on several occasions, including at the 11th European Conference on Mathematical and Theoretical Biology in Lisbon (2018).In 2020, I attended the Global Food Security Storytelling Masterclass, where I was selected as a finalist to travel to the Cambridge Science Festival to present my "story" of my research where I received the Audience Choice Award. In this role I was tasked with analysing the effectiveness of fallow periods in preventing the outbreaks of sea lice in salmon farms across Shetland; ultimately producing a report for use by the various salmon companies within Shetland. In order to produce this report I had to gather all the available data and, through analysing this data for any trends, make a recommendation on possible changes to fallow periods currently executed across salmon farms. Working in the large salmon hatchery in Shetland, my primary role involved looking after the salmon from egg to smolt stage; carrying out health checks and general maintenance. I also gained experience in grading and vaccinating the salmon in preparation for their transition to sea. I also carried out laboratory work to analyse quality of water; measuring various things such as nitrite and ammonia present in the water and also blood tests on the salmon during smoltification to ensure they are ready to be transferred to sea. I also carried out some data analysis looking at various things that could be improved within the hatchery, such as growth rates and mortality rates in newly hatched salmon to try determine a way in which their growth can be improved. Training from Grieg Seafood included: Fish Welfare courses (where I learned about various things such as water quality and human impact’s effect on a fish’s ability to thrive), certificates in Sea Survival and First Aid. I also gained a Forklift license in this role. Show less

I primarily worked (as assistant to the Curator of Collections) with the collections team in the museum stores. My duties included the registration, documentation, cataloguing and storage of artefacts, as well as researching exhibitions and the transportation of artefacts to different events. In summer 2014 I worked alongside the Curator to produce a WWI exhibition, which saw me put to use the research skills I had developed at university. I was offered a great deal of independence in this role, which saw me helping with the production of graphic panels, writing exhibition text, general budgeting and the logistics of setting up a large, curated exhibition. I researched war stories of Shetlander’s who had been lost in WWI, ultimately writing an article for use by the BBC as part of their centenary commemorations. Show less
