The course will also discuss other areas that will include, among others: the concept of "international legal personality", non-State actors in the international system, the relationship between domestic and international law, the rules of use of force, the international legal system on the various tribunals which it comprises, the peaceful settlement of international disputes, and the laws of war. Perhaps unsurprisingly, different actors have different views on how to resolve law and security dilemmas. Adding to the complication, "security" is a contested term. This course explores its different meanings and interpretations, taking particular stock of the evolution of “security” from “state security” to “human security” – with the latter providing a useful analytical framework for the course.
