Areeka is an exceptional community leader and facilitator who navigates spaces wisely and confidently. for the past two years, in her role as a Global Lounge Community Animator, Areeka has demonstrated exceptional leadership, interpersonal and community building skills. Areeka's deep commitment and service to the Global Lounge and UBC community immensely contributed to the recognition of the Global Lounge as a space for critical engagement and reflection across the UBC campus and beyond. This year alone, Areeka has co-initiated several panels that touched upon very time-sensitive and critical global issues in the world. One such example is when Areeka with polished confidence, humility and wisdom successfully launched the #metoo panel at the Global Lounge where she amplified the voices of women, gender minorities and sexual survivors about consent and rape culture. Areeka created a safe and inclusive space for all individuals. Areeka has always demonstrated the capacity to effectively handle challenging and sensitive situations. It is a rare treat to encounter a human being as impressive as Areeka Riaz whose passion for community building is truly admirable.

      - After observing gaps in the University's existing course offerings and curriculum, and conducting research on unmet needs of undergraduate students, I presented a proposal for an upper level undergraduate course to a team of faculty. I created and taught my course, Decolonial Approaches to International Relations, with the sponsorship of the University's Political Science department. I taught my class based on alternative and community based approaches to education, where I created opportunities for practical and hands-on learning for my students, in addition to conducting evaluations and teaching weekly class sessions. Much of this course was inspired by teaching methodologies proposed by Paulo Freire's and bell hooks’ theories on alternative and community based education. Show less
