A year of working with state of the art technology in the power industry at the UKs largest and most efficient power station. During my year I was based in the performance and regulation department whilst also carrying out placements in the Operations, Mechanical Engineering and maintenance departments. One of my main responsibilities was to carry out analysis of the water steam cycle to ensure the units were operating correctly and to protect the boiler from corrosion to extend the life of the boiler and reduce down time of units. Carrying out performance and commercial risk assessments to make decisions on how the power station will operate to maximise financial income and not risk the reliability and flexibility. Completing weekly reports too update key stakeholders on the power stations commercial, performance, technical and maintenance activities. I carried out a project which was an investigation to optimisation of the anti-icing system and how money can be saved by operating the system in a less conservative way. This included trending past data, understanding how the system works and having meetings and discussions with operators and commercial/performance engineers. Show less
