Research Assistant
-
Feb 2015 - Oct 2015
I worked as a Research Assistant for Self Directed Support Scotland (SDSS). They are a national membership organisation that works with disabled people's organisations that promote independent living. This role involved conducting individual research on behalf of SDSS. The aim of the project was to find out the importance of User-led Disabled People's Organisations in helping disabled people live more independent lives.I conducted a qualitative piece of research and my chosen method was semi-structured interviews. Then I analysed my data using Thematic Analysis. As part of this role I had to contact SDSS member organisations and arrange meetings with key people in the organisation. Through these meetings, I have found out exactly what these organisations do and how they help disabled people. Through building working relationships with key people, they have helped me find participants for my research. This has allowed me to use my research skills in an applied setting and illustrate my organisational skills. As part of my research I spoke to service users about Self Directed Support. This role has given me an insight into the effect that policy can have on individuals.

Event Coordinator
-
Oct 2013 - Jan 2014
I volunteered for save the children as part of their stock generation team. My role involved planning events,to raise money and awareness for Save the Children. I was in charge of organising the Christmas event. I gained a lot of important skills which would useful in any industry or sector. I developed my communications, project management, fundraising and marketing skills. The role involved contacting local businesses in order to obtain items we could put in our raffle; I had to be persistent in reminding businesses without being pushy. In the end, I secure 11 prizes for the raffle, which is illustrative of my good telephone manner and my communication skills. To advertise our event, I had to contact PR teams, magazines and bloggers. I utilised social media to market the event as well. The event was a success as we raised over £600 for Save the children.
