FreeUp! Emancipation Day Celebration is an artistic platform that seeks to bring light to Black Canadian history and achievement by linking our past to the present and imagining a future together through the voices of artists. This is an annual event organized by Emancipation Arts. Anyika Mark created an extension of her play Making Moves that brought her characters to Eglinton West Little Jamaica where they reminisced about the vibrancy of a community being sucked dry from gentrification. Anyika had the opportunity to work with CBC Gem and Emancipation Arts to direct the filmed theatre performance, cast the actors (acting in it herself!), create the entire set design and pick the costumes for each character. PIECE OF MINE Arts presents original works created by artists of the African Diaspora that explores African Canadian narratives. Based in Toronto, Canada, the company platforms bold pieces in development as well as mainstage plays. We nurture opportunities for the growth and preservation of legacy. Black Women in Theatre was a resurgence for professional artists, who identify as Black women, to have the freedom to flesh out work, receive dramaturgical support, and connect with an audience hungry for their stories. Anyika Mark was the writer and director for her component of the Black Women In Theatre event. She was the casting director, costumer and set designer, musical director and developed her own social media materials to attract her peer networks to the event. Show less

    • Project Coordinator, Black Futures on Eglinton
      • Sep 2019 - Feb 2020

CP Planning partnered with Black Urbanism TO to collaborate with community in identifying, celebrating, and supporting the cultural strength within the Black residents of the Eglinton Avenue West and Little Jamaica neighbourhoods (between Allen Road and Keele Street). As part of the Black Futures on Eglinton project, local youth (aged 13-30) will apply various community engagement practices to learn, from community, the cultures of support, creativity, and entrepreneurship, that make up this unique neighbourhood. Lessons from community will be summarized in a final report and mini-documentary. As Project Coordinator, I worked alongside the project team and community members to create cultural events. This included an Afro-futuristic writing workshop, Black Lens, at the local library (Maria A. Schucka), Reggae Night and a poetry contest! Show less
