Throughout my degree at the Maastricht Science Programme, I took part in bi-annual 'project periods'. During these 6 week projects, I was able to choose a research topic of interest, and work in a small group of students to research and present our findings. I gained a lot of experience in these projects, improving my skills in literature searching, peer reviewing, academic writing, teamwork, and project leading. These project periods allowed me to gain knowledge on what it is like to work in a research group, and allowed me to improve my communication skills, as well as my presentation skills. Some of the topics I worked on include: Plant Science, Osteoarthritis, Biotechnology, and more. These projects were a challenging, creative, and interesting way to apply my scientific knowledge to real-life settings. Show less

During my Bachelor's degree, I had the opportunity to perform independent research for my thesis. I conducted my research at the Department of Medical Microbiology, at the Maastricht University Hospital. During this research project, I worked independently in the lab to create and test hypotheses, as well as conducted experiments under the guidance of my supervisor. I gained valuable knowledge and experience during this time period, and this internship helped me to improve my teamwork, communication and laboratory skills. Unfortunately, the physical research was cut short due to the pandemic, and instead, I was asked to write an academic article to complete my thesis. After finishing with my peer review, my supervisor submitted my thesis paper to the journal 'Membranes', where it was successfully published in May 2021. This was a major accomplishment for me, and this experience has encouraged me to continue working towards my goal of a successful and bright scientific career. Show less
