  In the 1940's, a group of scientists associated with the American Museum of Natural History in New York, with the support of several oil companies, began investigating the vast underwater Aragonite sand deposits discovered on the Great Bahamas Bank. After years of sampling and general research, the Aragonite was found to have unique physical and chemical properties that proved to be most attractive as a raw material in many industries. Among the diverse uses are cement; glass containers; optical, automotive, and specialty glass; animal and poultry feed; waste acid neutralization; agricultural lime; beach restoration; air pollution control; and it also meets the ASTM requirements as a fine aggregate. Today, numerous new applications continue to be explored for this unique source of near pure calcium carbonate known as OOLITIC ARAGONITE. By dredging and piling the Aragonite up in shallow water, Ocean Cay was created. It's a 90-acre artificial island that is the base for the mining operations. Also created was a turning basin that can accommodate ships up to 900 feet long. This site is located approximately 50 miles from the U.S. Mainland, directly on the Gulf Stream.
