As a volunteer musician with MOC, I made the rounds at hospitals performing music by the bedsides of patients. In Philadelphia, I served the Children's Hospital Of Philadelphia, St. Christopher's Hospital For Children, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, and Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. When I moved to Boston I performed for patients at the Tufts Floating Hospital for Children and the Veterans Medical Center. Staff Firmware Design Engineer
-
Apr 2007 - Jan 2012
STAFF FIRMWARE DESIGN ENGINEER Primary work concerned developing, validating, and supporting software for LSI’s next generation Link Communication Processor (LCP), a link layer device for multiservice applications translating network traffic between circuit-switched (i.e., TDM), cell-switched (i.e., ATM), and packet-switched (i.e., PPP) protocols. The LCP contained a dual core ARM11 processor running embedded Linux, the target platform for the firmware. Its development included the following accomplishments: + Developed the firmware’s framework with a team supporting all OS resources (i.e., semaphores, handles, threads, ISRs, alarms), access to platform devices (i.e., memory, timers, registers, FPGAs), and management of protocol block API infrastructure.+ Designed and implemented a warm restart mechanism that allowed the firmware to be restarted without affecting hardware operation or interrupting traffic.+ Optimized the memory allocation algorithm to efficiently pack buffers in the device’s internal SRAM, eliminating wasted space and increasing resource availability.Managed the simulation and configuration software of LSI’s network processor (the Advanced Payload Plus) for system integration testing with the LCP.+ Programmed real time and best effort traffic schedulers to serve different classes of service (i.e., guaranteed bandwidth verses best effort). + Collaborated on development of distributed firmware operation, allowing user applications to call APIs via RPC on a remote host.+ Created a watchdog mechanism to ensure device restart if the firmware became unresponsive.+ Contributed to developing a N+1 protection switch feature that let the application switch traffic from a non-working LCP (one amongst “N” in operation) to a backup LCP (the “+1”) with minimal downtime. MEMBER OF TECHNICAL STAFFPrimary work concerned developing, validating, and supporting software for two of Agere’s telecom devices: the Link Layer Processor (LLP), a multiservice device allowing applications to migrate from traditional ATM networks to newer IP networks on a common platform; and the PI40X/PI40C, a next generation family of scalable switch fabric devices used for packet routing. The LLP contained an embedded ARM9 processor running OSE, the target platform for the firmware. The PI40X in contrast was controlled via a host processor running VxWorks, the target platform for the firmware. Software development for these devices included the following accomplishments:+ Developed a memory allocator for the LLP that managed the distribution of buffers in the device’s internal memory.+ Developed drivers and associated APIs for the HDLC, PPP, and Frame Relay protocol blocks of the LLP. + Tested Pseudo-Wire-Over-Ethernet (PWE) performance of LLP with a network processor, ensuring clock recovery conformance with industry standards.+ Designed and developed a TDM manager for the PI40X scheduler which optimized the use of bandwidth for scheduling TDM traffic+ Developed the APIs for the PI40X traffic scheduler, buffer manager, and initialization module, allowing the customer to operate the device through functional abstractions. + Integrated a software simulator model of the PI40X into the firmware testing environment which allowed the firmware to be validated before the actual silicon arrived.+ Developed the driver for an OC1-92 port card that was used for validating OC-192 (~10Gbits/s) applications of the PI40X.+ Helped create a test environment for a distributed system of 2-20+ interconnected evaluation boards that could be remotely accessed for running validation tests. Oct 2000 - Jun 2002
MEMBER OF TECHNICAL STAFF Primary work concerned developing, validating, and supporting a bit-accurate-model (BAM) for Lucent’s family of next generation switch fabric chips, the PI40X/PI40C. Individually capable of servicing 40Gbits/s of bandwidth, these protocol independent devices could be connected together to scale into a multichip 2.5Tbits/s fabric for switching packet and cell traffic in high-speed routers. Their development included the following accomplishments:+ Designed and implemented a BAM simulator of the PI40X/PI40C devices for RTL verification. Because the model ran so much faster than the RTL, verification testing was completed much more quickly and efficiently.+ Exposed hardware bugs by tracing faulty chip operation down into the model’s internal logic and isolating the problem.+ Reduced simulation time even further by profiling the model’s longest running functions and rewriting them to optimize their performance.+ Validated chip functionality by writing unit tests to exercise features and operation.+ Assumed full responsibility for the PI40X and PI40C simulator software after contractors left the project.+ Provided continuous software support to the hardware team during the course of chip verification.
