  As a fall intern at the southeast fisheries marine lab I assist the shark population assessment group with their ongoing projects. During the course of the internship I assisted with field days for the GULFSPAN survey. In the field I learned how to safely handle sharks, skates, and rays. I deployed 600 ft and 100ft gill nets and I took 3 measurements (pre caudal, fork-length, and stretch total length) of each shark caught. I obtained fin clips and muscle samples from live specimen. I deployed dart tags on juvenile sharks.In the dry lab I freeze dried fin clips and then prepared them for isotope analysis using a bead mill. I packed the samples into tins of 1.5 mg. I sectioned the vertebrae with a IsoMet low speed saw, glued them to slides, and examined them underneath a microscope. In the wet lab I have cleaned vertebrae, and jaws. Show less

The Frozen Cow was really unique because we used liquid nitrogen to make the ice cream right in front of our customers.
